Car Maintenance Tips You Can Do at Home

Car maintenance tips – Man changing the oil in his car

Whether you’ve just purchased a new NZ car or you’re riding with an old favourite, routine maintenance can make the difference between years of faithful service or a laundry list of mechanical problems. Slip into your dirtiest overalls and dust off that toolbox because we’re about to cover essential maintenance tips you can do from home. Follow these steps to ensure your car stays running smoothly.

Oil Changes

Oil changes are one of the most basic car maintenance tasks and also one of the most important. Regularly changing your car’s oil will keep your engine singing sweet tunes instead of rumbling and grumbling while running.

To change the oil, you’ll need to check the oil level, drain the old oil, replace the oil filter, and add new oil. The process is extremely straightforward, and if in doubt, Youtube is a handy teacher with plenty of detailed guides.

Tire Maintenance

Proper tire maintenance is essential for safety and ensuring your tires last as long as possible. One of the most important things you can do is check the tire pressure regularly. Underinflated tires can cause handling problems and wear out faster, while overinflated tires can lead to a rough ride and reduced traction.

You can quickly check the tire pressure with a tire gauge; you can find this at any auto parts store or most petrol stations. You should also rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles to ensure even wear.

Air Filter Maintenance

The air filter is an essential component of your car’s engine. It filters out dirt and debris that can damage your engine and reduce performance. A dirty air filter can reduce your car’s fuel efficiency and lead to costly repairs.

To check the air filter, remove the cover from the air filter housing and inspect the filter. If it looks dirty or clogged, replace it with a new one.

Brake Maintenance

Your car’s brakes are one of the most critical safety features, and keeping them in good condition is essential. If you hear any squeaking or grinding noises when you brake, it may be time to replace your brake pads. You can also check the rotors for wear and warping. If they are worn or warped, you will need to replace them.

To check your brake pads, look through the spokes of your wheel. If the pads are less than a quarter inch thick, it’s time to replace them. To check your rotors, remove the wheel and check for signs of wear or damage, such as grooves or scoring. Use a straight edge to check for warping by measuring the distance between the rotor and the straight edge.
