Your guide to the 2026 WoF rule changes
From 1 November 2026, New Zealand’s Warrant of Fitness system is changing. For many drivers, the biggest difference will be how often their vehicle needs a WoF.
The new WoF rules are designed to reduce unnecessary inspection costs for lower risk vehicles while maintaining road safety. However, the changes will not apply to every vehicle at the same time.
Here is a simple breakdown of the new WoF rules NZ drivers need to know, and what they mean for you.

What are the new WoF rules?
Under the current system, most vehicles registered from 2000 onwards require a WoF every 12 months. From November 2026, qualifying vehicles between four and 14 years old will move to a WoF every two years.
The changes will be introduced in stages:
- Vehicles first registered on or after 1 November 2019 will become eligible for a two-year WoF from 1 November 2026.
- Vehicles first registered between 1 November 2013 and 31 October 2019 will become eligible from 1 November 2027.
- Vehicles between 14 and 26 years old will continue to require an annual WoF.
- Vehicles first registered before 1 January 2000 will move from six-monthly to annual WoF inspections.
- For brand new light vehicles the second WoF will be due after four years instead of three.
What do the new WoF rules mean for drivers?
If your vehicle qualifies, you will eventually need to book and pay for a WoF only once every two years.
You do not need to apply for the change. Your vehicle’s eligibility will be determined by its registration date, and the new expiry period will be applied when it completes a WoF inspection under the updated system.
It is important to remember that a two-year WoF does not mean your vehicle is guaranteed to remain safe for two years. Drivers are still responsible for maintaining their tyres, brakes, lights, windscreen and other safety related components between inspections.
Regular servicing will become even more important, particularly for drivers covering high annual kilometres.
Will WoF inspections check anything new?
Yes, where fitted, WoF inspections will check that there are no warning or malfunction lights showing for Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist systems.
These advanced safety systems are increasingly common in newer vehicles. If a warning light appears on your dashboard, it is best to have it checked rather than waiting until your next WoF.

Penalties are also increasing
While some vehicles will require fewer inspections, the penalties for serious non compliance are becoming tougher.
From 1 November 2026, the infringement fee for driving a vehicle with a WoF that has expired for more than two months will increase from $200 to $350.
The infringement fee for non-compliant wheels and tyres will also rise from $150 to $350, with a maximum court imposed fine of up to $1,000.
Checking your WoF expiry date and keeping your vehicle well maintained will therefore remain essential.
Buying a car under the new WoF rules
The new WoF rules NZ 2026 changes may make vehicles in the four – fourteen year age range even more appealing. Many will qualify for a two year WoF, helping owners save time and inspection costs.
At Portage Cars, we have a wide selection of vehicles within this age bracket. Every vehicle is serviced and issued with a new WoF before purchase, so eligible buyers can drive away without another WoF inspection due for up to two years (once these changes are in play!).
As an AA approved dealership, we also provide the added reassurance of AA odometer verification. This helps confirm that the odometer reading has been checked, giving you greater confidence in the vehicle’s recorded kilometres and history.
Fast finance is also available, making it easier to find a suitable vehicle and get on the road sooner. Our new and improved finance application means you can submit yours in under 5 minutes from the comfort of your couch. From $0 deposit and same day approvals*, we can get you on the road fast.
A simpler system, but maintenance still matters
For many New Zealand drivers the new rules will mean fewer WoF appointments and lower inspection costs. The main thing is to understand when your vehicle becomes eligible, as the changes are being phased in according to its original registration date.
Whether your WoF is required every six months or every two years, ongoing servicing and basic safety checks remain the best way to keep your vehicle dependable between inspections.
